If it's not possible for him to play every game then I would simply play him in the Games we gave a chance of winning.
I would not hold him back in case a defender gets injured. Better to say play him tonight where we have a chance of winning . If both he and a defender gets injured and can't play in the FA cup game then that's not so bad as it's a pointless game we don't need anyway.
