Slavery was and is abhorrent and his statue almost serves as a warning from history (served).
We cannot rewrite history though, as things become dishonest if we try to do this.
Many cities were built on the business of trading sugar, tobacco and slaves and many lovely old buildings were funded by these profits. Do we just tear these down in protest??
The great irony about Colston was his altruism in later life, which in no way makes up for profiting from others misery but shows he was not all bad.
This doesn’t fit the current narrative though, and I am in no way trying to justify this man’s actions!
