Budget Laptop of Choice?

Asking for a friend as I'm only familiar with MacBooks.

She will be using it mostly for web-based working and document producing (no video editing on music production). Probably a USB port or two do a smell up if things go wrong. Will need to be quite light and portable but usable for long periods of working at a time. Looking at the lower end of the budget scale.

Are Chromebooks any good?
