He self isolated nearer family to make sure he had support for his child

Because he and his wife "had symptoms" and now confirmed both had the virus.

If my nan had symptoms, I would make the 100 mile journey to her house to look after her. Other family nearby are older and have underlying health concerns therefore at more risk then I am.

So what is the right thing to do? Stay at home or go and take care of her.

We all have families.
