I thought it was a contest and we were losing to the Germans again

The Italians were much fancied going into this pandemic but but poor control in the early rounds left them with too much to do to qualify for the knockout stage. Their expensively assembled hospitals buckled under the weight of expectation while the makeshift British team surprised many by holding their own and remain in the tournament.
