if you mess about with next season you have as many (if not more) legal headaches as you have with shortening this one, but without the advantage of being able to blame coronavirus - any decisions in relation to next season are entirely commercial.
Legally they are damned if they do, damned if they don't.
I personally think you have less issues curtailing this one and leaving the next one unaffected. Many of this season's problems can be solved by rolling things forward a season - eg making up TV rights, sponsor benefits, and so on.
It's a relatively straightforward conversation with a sponsor about rolling this season's lost value forward and give them something extra next season. It's less straightforward if you have to compensate them somehow for both this season and whatever you're losing next season by curtailing things by choice.
Buggered if I know how you resolve European spaces, relegations and promotions mind.
