Although I suspect the flu (by which I think most people wrap up all sorts of cold/flu/respiratory diseases) numbers are down this year in comparison to previous years, that week I’ve cited in January appears to have been by far the worst week we’ve had in that there were around 1000 extra deaths in that week in comparison to the norm.
That’s probably about what we’ve had in the last 7 days but we are facing that sort of numbers or above for several weeks on end now. And that is even WITH lockdown/social distancing. The week in January was without any such measures.
The social distancing is modelled to reduce death numbers by about 80 - 90% I think so without it you could possibly have been looking at an extra 10k deaths per week over a prolonged period!
