I thought one theory of how it ended was that it mutated into a really strong

form which killed everybody that had it and therefore it died out. Meanwhile people developed immunity to the lesser strands.

I remember watching a really interesting BBC Four(?) Documentary about it. I’d love them to repeat it if you really interested in watching it again.
