Personally I think the media caused it

If people hear there might be a shortage a few will buy extra. When the shelves start to run low even more people will buy more than they usually would.

At that point it spirals out of control.

The shops run out and Debbie on Facebook posts a message saying how stupid it is as she couldn't buy what she actually needs.

She already has plenty for the next few weeks but thought she’d buy a bit more just in case all the stupid people were panicking.
