best is baby alpaca, but even better (and very expensive) is vicuña wool

it's an endangered species so there are only small amounts of wool but it is incredibly soft.

I went to a weaving center in Arequipa, Peru and bought my mum a small vicuña wool scarf. I was feeling rich and generous at the time, which was lucky because it was about 120 quid iirc.
