I read an article about a city firm where everyone gives real time feedback on everyone. So if you're giving a presentation, people will rate you, live, out of 10, and you get to see all this feedback and have to deal with it.
It encourages a culture of total honesty, and some people thrive under it, i.e. those that are able to always remember "the intent of the other person is to help me get better, not to criticise" (which may or may not be true of course....). For others though, its waaaay too much to handle, and it feels like every day is just endless intense criticism. So the firm accumulates over time a certain personality type that thrives under that kind of intense pressure.
Strikes me that Emi has just had a bout of utterly honest feedback in line with this. As you say, brutal. Be interesting to see how he responds to it!
