because i want people to avoid the same near death experience i had when starting out and the tip is.... plan your first trips on days devoid or with little wind. second time i went out i nearly killed my self as as soon as i got off the river and on to the big wide broad a 16 foot reasonably high sided canoe is going to get flat-track bullied by mother nature and you will be in a mother of a battle just to make any progress to get the craft in the direction you want let alone progress forwards in a positive manner.
so don't go out in a hoolie. do not, double underlined neon flashing sign klaxon noises, do that. not to start with. later on as confidence builds you can use the wind to your advantage and in some cases you can use judicial positioning of the paddle braced against the gunwhale as a tiller and then the wind can push you along with next to no effort and that my chums, is very very sexy.
