Phone line modification help sought

I have a phone socket in the wall downstairs with a cat 5e cable running upstairs in the wall to under the floorboards in the room above, this room had the bt master socket. How do I connect this raw cat 5e to the master socket to make the socket downstairs live? Is there some sort of adapter or do I wire it into the master socket? I ultimately want to plug the bt hub into this socket downstairs. I phoned bt but they were not helpful. Cheers pals.
