Hmm. I preferred the suggestion that you just make the lines 10-20cm wide and

if there is any overlap between the two then benefit of the doubt goes to the attacker.

Daylight could be good but what if one players is making a full stride and has one foot half a metre behind the other and that foot is the only but that overlaps with a defender. Can see that equally causing some chaos.
