Why do people use the word 'literally' so much?

I mean what the f**k is the point in the word 'literally'? Don Goodman just used it twice in a matter of seconds;

"That must have just been literally inches away". No, it must just have been inches away.

"We're literally 5 minutes in". NO, we're just 5 minutes in!

What is the point in this word??
