VAR is that rules that were perhaps technically being breached regularly are now going to be picked up by VAR if checked for.
Now you can view that as good for the game or detracting from it. You get the same issues in rugby and they’ve had to row back a bit on the extent the video ref intervened because you can find an offence in any ruck if you look hard enough.
The encroachment rule is probably one that nobody has thought about much because unless unbelievably blatant it wasn’t enforced rigidly before. I think football therefore maybe needs to consider whether they want penalties regularly retaken due to minor infringements. Same happened with the keepers in the World Cup and they quickly tweaked the rules didn’t they?
Would it make the game any worse if the players on the edge of the box were allowed to move at the same time as the pen taker for example?
