The one fact your missing from there is how the german railways were paid for.

This is my stance:

I'd happily support the nationalisation of the railways if it was self funding from the commuters that use the service. Of course it would inevitably lead to much higher ticket prices for said commuters but that wouldn't affect me since i have no intention in using them.
