I did a post about this a while back.

I know people don't like Blair but he is right.
You have to win the middle ground to get a majority.
Without power you just have pie in the sky ideas that will never get passed.
With power you have a chance to pass controversial (at the time) ideas and make them mainstream across the political spectrum. Things such as min wage and same sex marriage.
