whta is offside?

Just what is the offisde rule? Where does an attacker have to be to be offisde? Is he offside if any part of him is level with the defender? Or if any part (even a finger) is infront of the defender? I thought there had to be actual daylight between a defender and striker but after today I?m not sure.
