We paid 50k for him. Which sounds like nothing, until you realise that only a few years earlier, he'd become Britain's first ever 200k footballer. And he was 31 when we signed him.

Paying a quarter of what had only recently been a record fee for any British footballer - for a 31 year old - don't think it was that cheap.

He more than paid that back, though.
