Actually, it’s always been more common than you think, especially with musicals.

Nina Simone’s version of Feeling Good in 1965 was a cover of a song from Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse’s musical The Roar of the Greasepaint from 1964. By the time Simone covered it, it had already been covered at least six times. Similarly, about a gazillion people covered What Kind of Fool Am I within a year of Newley writing it for Stop The World I Want to Get Off.

That said, I can’t stand The Greatest Showman so I feel your pain.
