it's amazing hammerite is, the rolls royce of metal paint. it is easy to apply needs no primer and covers a multitude of sins incuding rust. i'm not a big fan of the "hammered" effect so i go smooth all the way baby. brushes wash out a treat in white spirit and [bonus trade secret] it can be used to make boring grey plastic guttering look like cast iron. need to rough it up a bit with sandpaper first to get a good "key".
