That sometimes players just don't settle at clubs and there's not much a manager can do about it. A view with which I have some sympathy. Of course the converse of that is that the manager can't take the credit if by some reverse of fortune a player fits in sensationally well. Take away the credit for the excellence of Holt in the play-off season, and the brilliance of Huckerby two years ago and what else is there to commend Worthington for. Not much IMO.
And the wider point is that no-one knows how a transfer will work out. So when we had players like Svennson and Edworthy who we knew could do a job for us, why engage in the (unsuccessful as it turned out) lottery of replacing them with Thorne and Colin etc? The club talks about "stability and continuity" being important and I agree with them. So again I ask a question that no-one will answer "if the club believes in the importance of stability and continuity why on earth are we continuing to employ a manager who plainly doesn't?"
