I think it is only right to point out

that 'The Players’ Tribune' "...provides athletes with a platform to connect directly with their fans, in their own words."

In other words it is a way to drive the narrative, avoid all those nasty journalists that may ask difficult questions, and present oneself in whatever favourable way one chooses.
