Why would one assume corruption *doesn’t* exist in football?

Bearing in mind that it exists in many parts of society where finance and status are important, why assume that football is an altruistic exception?

How else to explain Sunderland’s repeated escapes from relegation, for example? They were cockroaches until Ellis Short withdrew funding. That’s just supposition, obviously, but why is it so hard to believe that refs could be affected?
