part of the problem is the cost of entry

a former colleague ran for election twice - the second time cost him £20k+ of his own money and 3 months of unpaid leave. He made it at the third attempt in TMPM's daft snap election.

How many people will have that sort of cash/appetite for debt/not need a job to pay the bills? Not many who aren't already in well paid careers or wealthy backgrounds.

And if you're trying to convince a Tory association to put you up as their candidate, for example, you have to be from the right background (I've sat on of those selection panels in my younger more naïve days - suffice to say the old dears prefer one of their own).
