I spent some time professionally round Whitehall and Westminster when younger

and I couldn't agree with you more. I would never, ever put my family through what it would take from them for me to be an MP. But if I had no family and it was just about me I'd still never do it. It's a totally s**t job being an MP. It's a s**tter job being a junior minister. Some Minister of State and Cabinet jobs are actually pretty good but you can't get there without going through all the other s**t. And the Great Offices Of State are all just awful jobs no sane person would desire.

And yet so very many do.

There are good, decent people in Parliament, but not many, and certainly not restricted to any one party.
