It's a combination of sovereignty and rotten state of EU. You're right re the global economy etc, but you're in a position to decide direction in a way that is lost by membership of (an increasingly federal ...?) EU. The EU has federalisation in its DNA, and it's essentially that which I think lay at the heart of why people voted to leave. Against a historical background of difference (see De Gaulle e.g.!)
