A process to define the broad shape of Brexit as supported by the electorate together with the real "red lines", followed then (and only then) by issuance of notification under A50, and a negotiation done by grown-ups.
Would have been nice.
It would have required politicians of all stripes to recognise that this foundational issue cuts across party lines, of course, and to run the whole thing outwith the normal structures.
Instead each has tried to use Brexit as leverage against the others. Predictably, this didn't work, because Labour and the Tories are as split and as incompetently led as each other, and the Lib Dems really don't matter any more.
The DUP's played a blinder, in terms of their own constituencies, I spose.
