The history will be interesting

It's a mess, and the causes are many. But much more important is the question of what to do now, given where we've got to, and the differences that have been exposed (and exacerbated). It's just not useful to say, well, we were idiots to get ourselves into this position, or to blame other people for being idiots who got us into this position (TM, take note ....).
