About 30 years ago we'd just beaten them and I was leaving the ground with a mate. As I was walking out a steward suggested I hid my scarf, which I did.
There were guys waiting outside the away end for small groups of Norwich supporters to split off from the main throng.
We were about a minute from the ground when this big guy started shouting at us and then came over a threw a punch which I, luckily and uncharacteristically, somehow managed to duck.
Panicking, we decided to leg it to the nearest cop who was about 100 yards away. Where this starts to get crazy was the fact the guy and two of his mates followed us and were still trying to attack us, right in front of the cop. His colleagues saw what was happening and had to, literally surround me and my mate (who is a Port Vale supporter ironically) and called for a police van to come by and pick us up.
When the van arrived we climbed in and found a bunch of other Norwich supporters who had been attacked to various degrees. My mate and I managed to escape unscathed but I dread to think how bad it might have been if the cops hadn't been there.
The thing that shocked me the most was that when the guy started trying to hit us there was an incredible feeling of malevolence from the entire crowd of Brum supporters around us. It seemed like nobody would have tried to stop him and more people may have even joined in.
Lovely place that I have never visited since.
