It wasn't quite the ordinary situation though

A massive mansion, huge celebrity, lots of kids. It's always easy as an outsider to pass judgement on a situation, but people do all sorts of things that look extraordinary with hindsight.

At the time, presumably, they had no thought that a celeb as big as MJ would be so stupid or have the capability to be a paedophile.
