Hypernormalisation.

One becomes normalised to weirdness, because the assumption is that "well, it can't be as bad as I suspect it is, because someone, some authority or other, would do something." But no, the world works on the normalisation of weirdness. Like politics. We know the politicians are lying, the politicians know that we know that they're lying, but as long as the lies they tell comport with what we're expecting, everything just carries on. Weirdness normalised.

At this point someone might bring up that the president of the usa has been mates with several paedos - Jeffrey Epstein, John Casablancas, Roy Cohn - and no-one seems particularly bothered. I mean, having one mate who turns out to be into kids is unfortunate, but several? Who's mates with many nonces?
