Looking at other countries' politics is always interesting

Our own politicians are adept at using our own idioms, invisible assumptions and so on to manipulate us - other countries' politicians, though, use the idioms and assumptions which would work on citizens of that country so it's much more transparent and obvious what they're playing at.

I think it was Churchill who pointed out that democracy is the worst possible system, other than all the other possible systems. It rewards behaviours most reasonable people would find abhorrent and to rise to the top you've got to be about as unlike the average person you're supposedly speaking for as it's possible to be.
