The problem is, we've started normalizing things

What was once an impeachable offense (e.g. paying hush money to porn stars), is now a headline for a day or two. Praising a dictator is seen as a 'character trait'. Once we've established new norms for disgraceful behavior it's incredibly hard to go back. And the trickle down effect on the behavior of others is already clear to see throughout society. This all goes for the UK as much as the US.
So, by being upset, we hold up the standards. We call out the bulls**t. We play our role as citizens in a democracy by saying "this is not normal".
