And that essentially is the nub of the argument.

Away from sport though, there are big issues to resolve.

The right of an individual to identify as whatever gender they choose versus the legitimate concerns of women (born as) who, as an example, are uneasy about sharing what they would consider to be their safe spaces with individuals who were previously men.

At face value, a liberal society should just allow people to be whatever they want to be. But the flipside is that this can potentially impact negatively on other people - and their own rights and considerations should not automatically be dismissed as bigotry.
