This in the comments sums up a lot of my disappointment: “we do know that across history oppressive regimes have been the norm, not the exception.”

We seem to be actively encouraging oppression, whichever way we turn. After a lifetime spent with ever-increasing liberty, I can see the end of my life being spent with all of it reversing. I can also consider that it’s possible that we do know that my 18 year old son will have an adult life restricted by successive governments, which is very sad.
