Most people in the space business would probably say it was more important

The actual final step of landing was much less of a leap than the first actual trip of that distance. Before Apollo 8 the furthest any human had been from Earth was about 950 miles. Apollo 8 had to go 240,000 miles away and that was virtually all untried and untested.
