Talking of music, I need to download some songs to put on an MP3 player for a Xmas present

Is there any difference in terms of the platforms to use for downloading? For instance, what's best out of iTunes, Spotify etc?

I use iTunes for downloading and Spotify for making never-ending playlists to stream
