Absolutely there is...but where does one draw the line? Is it threatening and abusive?

Because if it is...then charge him on that count. But he shouldn't be charged or vilified to the extent he has until a charge is proven...BTW if it's racial then throw the book at him.
Imagine this...Play Off semi v Ipswich and their player retrieves the ball in the Barclay/Snakepit corner...I'd be amazed if he doesn't get atrocious verbal abuse.
I am not saying what happened is okay, but it is part and parcel of football all around the country.
