Is it him or the clubs?

We give a lot of credit to the role of manager / coach. It’s clear there are some outstanding ones (good and bad), as in every profession, but aren’t the rest just basically all doing the same thing? Carry on doing the job until either the team has a run of poor form, a star player leaves or the board discover some “ambition”. Their effect on results is probably nowhere near the immediate impact of the recruitment, physios, sports science and data analysts, let alone the players. A manager might have to put all that together, to an extent, but in the end that’s what it is. The clubs just have their periods of cyclical performance below the glass ceiling of the mega-rich. Kind of like life, really.
