depends if he materially strengthens them or not

and what else we could do with the money we'd be saving

and if we think they'd sign another player who'd strengthen them to the same/greater extent, then it may as well be us that cashes in than a third party

in short, I couldn't care less if we sell him to them as long as we sell him to someone
