Mississippi used to have "Liquor Stores" where you got anything > 5%. And even then, not all counties in the state were fully "wet". Some counties just sold beer / wine coolers (Alcopops). And some counties were fully dry - no alcohol at all.
So what used to happen is that the wet counties next to the dry ones would have Liquor stores aplenty just over the county line so you could easily drive and get your booze with a drive. And then go crash your car when you were driving back into your dry county having necked 1/2 bottle of bourbon on the drive home.
In a brown paper bag, of course. Can't have the righteous seeing alcohol.
And then just over the state line in Louisiana there were things like "Drive thru Daquari barns" go get a strong drink on the go!
