Do you wear one when driving? Crossing the road?

Go to Antwerp. Or Amsterdam. Or any number of other northern European city where you'll see thousands upon thousands of cyclists, barely any which are wearing helmets.

And where the numbers of cyclists suffering head injuries (or indeed any cycling injuries) are miniscule.

I suppose it's possible they're all completely bonkers and incredibly lucky. Or it might tell us something about how we plan our streets (and to some extent drive our cars), here.

Of course your point is that you're taking things as they are here. And fair enough. But we shouldn't ever assume there's anything inevitable about that. (And we should also remember that cycling is still a really, really low risk activity here. As well as being extremely good for you.)
