Whatever happened after that disastrous referendum it was always going to be a national

humiliation. There wouldn't be a negotiation, because we would have virtually zero bargaining power. We would be leaving a treaty against the wishes of the other parties. The departure procedure was not fully defined, so that those other parties could control all the levers. It was always going to work out like Cameron going to the EU and asking for concessions. They, unsurprisingly, refused, and that led to the referendum. What we have here is the hideous offspring of that.
