a unified Brexit working group being bold enough to stand by precisely what Brexit means (hard border, or Irish Sea border) could have negotiated something credible.

The absolute missed opportunity was for a hard Brexit with NI as its own special economic zone. Would have let the UK do trade deals and keep the little Englanders happy, and NI would have boomed economically by being the middle-man between the EU and the UK. Not perfect (Scotland would still have been a conundrum) but infinitely better than being neither in nor out.

Ho hum.
