Is that, for me, it's a very difficult thing to do close season these days. A new manager coming in can learn from seeing players in training, but only so much. The real test for any player is in a competitive match. So change in the summer, and the new guy doesn't really know his squad till 5-6 games into the season.
By that time the window has shut and he's stuck with what he has till january. In jan prices are high, and there is no guarantee a pleyer will fit seemlessly into the team without 7-8 games to settle. By the time you get to taht point you are fast running out of games again.......
So that leaves sticking with NW till October time, when we've had a decent idea of where 'his' team will take us, and changing then. This obviously makes a new guys task bloody hard if we are struggling.
Alternativly you cahnge now, spend 4 weeks choosing and appointing the new guy, and he still has 5/6 games of THIS season to take a look at the squad. He than has the summer to let palyers go, bring them in, a nd we START next season with a team close to what the new guy wants, and a much better chance of sucess.
Seems so bloody obvious to me, but then what do i know eh Barry?
