The premier league is one of the most marketable exports going, why would they want to change anything about it? Fundamentally, there is no competition for the NFL, there isn't an option for players to play elsewhere and earn more. The NFL is a monopoly.
I don't disagree with what you're saying in principle though. Would probably make our national team better too, and for a number of different reasons (1. More British players playing, 2. Greater need for clubs to develop their own rather than relying on splashing the cash, so better youth development / coaching, 3. More of our better players would go and play overseas).
To my mind, the issue is the lack of sustainability without tv money / outside investment. Being a well run club isn't enough to break even and achieve reasonable results anymore and that's f**ked up. The size of a club (I.e gate money and revenue from merchandise sales) is irrelevant in the championship, the clubs with the cash are those in year 1 post relegation and those with benefactors.
For the first time in my 25 years or so of being an eager footy fan I dispare for what it has become. To some extent makes supporting my local non league team more appealing, the reality of it is not so romantic though. It's probably a similar story at that level too.
