I think it's to do with the balance of the squad

we have loads of centre backs who are very good 'penalty box' defenders. They win headers and get in lots of good blocks, but are hopeless defending at anyone running at them. So we can only defend well by giving up possession and sitting deep. And, because most of our attackers are slow, we don't carry much threat on the break.

Basically relying on some individual magic to score. Which is pretty tough, when only one or two players in the team are capable of doing that.
