The rivalry is one of the most intense because

it goes way beyond football. The economic rivalry goes back centuries. Whichever club comes out on top damages the economy of the rival county to some extent. Local derbies between two clubs in the same city are meaningless in comparison unless based around religious or sectarian divides.
